Spinning

Supported spinning

Until now I had concentrated most on spinning with dropspindles. I found out quite quickly that top whorl spindles are not really my thing (or at least that I prefer turks), but I hadn’t given supported spinning a try yet. When spinning supported, you spin the spindle on a smooth surface, like a bowl, and draft with your other hand. I ordered a Russian spindle from GhstWorks on Etsy, it arrived safely, and I decided to try it out.

First I watched a YouTube video to see how it is done. It seemed a bit harder than spinning with a turk, but it looked quite nice. I tried spinning a bit, and actually succeeded quite quickly. I spun up a small sample of fiber, and enjoyed the different technique. I need to do it more often, of course, to really get better at it!
