Honesty / Music / Singing

Nana

I’m a bit hesitant to post this, to be honest. I’ve been a classical singer for years, but it was very hard to make a living out of it. I decided to change careers and combine singing with computer science, but it didn’t turn out the way I wanted. My lack of energy resulted in me spending all my energy on my day job, with little left for singing.

Not that I’m unhappy or anything. I’m quite grateful for being able to do all the things that I do, and for having options. But saying goodbye to the professional singing life has been a bit of a grieving process nonetheless. When I had voice problems in 2017, I took a good look at what I really wanted, and realised that a singing career wasn’t for me after all. However, changing my technique to deal with the suspected physical defect that caused my vocal problem was still inspiring and replenishing. The career now seems far away, and I enjoy singing, just for me.

Still, I sometimes feel like sharing, because I love music so much. So I decided to record a song for you. It’s called Nana, from Siete Canciones Españoles Populares by Manual de Falla. It’s a Spanish lullaby.

Nana, by Manual de Falla

The text is:

Nana

Duérmete, niño, duerme,
Duerme, mi alma,
Duérmete, lucerito
De la mañana.

Nanita, nana,
Nanita, nana.
Duérmete, lucerito
De la mañana.

I feel a bit self-conscious sharing a video of myself (why is it so hard to see and hear yourself in a video?), but I really love this song and I hope you do too! I recorded it live in my living room, on just another afternoon.

Lullaby

Sleep, child, sleep,
Sleep, my soul;
Sleep, little light
Of the morning.

Lullaby,
Lullaby,
Sleep, little light
of the morning.

    1. Thank you ? I think you know how scary it can be to put yourself out there… But I also think that we need more of this in the world, so well, here’s my bit.
